If you own acreage, live in the country, or have steep terrain that’s impossible to mow safely with a regular lawn mower, finding the right brush cutter can be a challenge. After a lot of research and hands-on use, I decided to go with the DR Power Pro 26 walk-behind brush cutter, and it’s been a game-changing tool for maintaining our property here in Montana.
In this post, I’ll walk through why I chose this machine, how it performs on steep ravines, tall grass, and thick weeds, and whether it might be the right solution for your land.
Why I Needed a Brush Cutter Instead of a Regular Mower
We have a property with:
- Long grass and thick weeds
- Ravines in both the front and back of the property
- Steep slopes that aren’t safe for a riding mower
- Areas that are too uneven for a standard push mower
Over the years, we have slowly been reclaiming parts of the land that were completely overgrown when we initially bought the property. A traditional mower just wasn’t cutting it (literally), and a weed whacker would take forever to get through it all.
I researched different options for our situation including:
- Skid steer mounted brush cutters
- Tractor-pulled brush hogs
- Walk-behind brush cutters
Ultimately, I chose a walk-behind brush cutter. This machine checked all my boxes with being safer on our steep terrain, easier to maneuver in tight areas, and able to fit in the back of my pickup for use on other properties. Plus, it is less destructive the the yard than our skid steer.
Why I Chose the DR Power Pro 26 Brush Cutter
After researching walk-behind options, DR Power was by far the brand with the most real-world reviews and information available. Other brands I looked at included Billy Goat and Swisher, but there just wasn’t nearly as much feedback to go on for me to a sound decision on either of those.
Key Specs of the DR Power Pro 26
- 26″ cutting width
- 15.5 HP engine
- Electric start (100% worth the upgrade)
- Three forward gears + reverse
- Power steering levers
- Floating mower deck
- Rated to cut saplings up to 2.5 inches in diameter
Quick note: I have no affiliation with DR Power. I bought this machine myself because I genuinely thought it would be the best solution for our property.
Assembly & First Impressions
The brush cutter was delivered by semi and arrived well packaged. Assembly took about 25 minutes, and everything went together smoothly.
Starting it up for the first time was easy, especially with the electric start, which I highly recommend if you’re considering this machine.
I had never used a brush cutter before, so there was a short learning curve, but once I got comfortable with the controls, it felt intuitive and very capable. My wife was able to run it pretty easily with a few tips as well.
Performance on Steep Terrain & Ravines
Clearing Steep Ditches
One of my main concerns was side-hilling and the stability of the brush cutter on steep slopes. The DR Power Pro handled this extremely well!
A big reason I chose the Pro model is the full pressure oil pump, which keeps the engine properly lubricated even when operating on hills (our main terrain). This is a huge advantage over splash-lubricated engines if you have sloped property like us.
The power steering levers make it easy to stay on line while side-hilling, control the machine easily while going up or down slopes and not as difficult to maneuver with it being a heavy machine.
Cutting Thick Grass, Weeds & Brush
I trialed the brush cutter on our problem areas with 3-6ft tall grass, thick thistles, woody weeds and dense overgrown areas that had not been mowed in years.
How It Performs
- Cuts most material cleanly in one pass
- The blade doesn’t bog down, even in dense growth
- The floating deck follows the uneven ground well
- It disperses clippings underneath without clogging the deck
I found that for our very steep sections, first gear gives the most control. I typically used:
- 1st gear for thick brush and steep areas
- 2nd gear for perimeter and lighter growth
- 3rd gear mainly just for only transporting
Is a Walk-Behind Brush Cutter Enough for Large Properties?
For extremely large clearing jobs, a tractor or skid steer mounted cutter might make sense. But for our situation, the walk-behind was the right balance of safety, control, versatility, and cost.
The time it took to clear our areas might seem a bit long but considering the terrain and density, felt manageable as this is something we will do only a couple of times a year. One side of our ravine took about 1.5 hours, while the larger, thicker ravine took closer to 2.5 hours. I'm sure this time will also improve, as this is the first time these sections have been mowed.
Other Uses Beyond My Property
With the brush cutter being able to fit in the bed of my truck, I've been able to test it on other property and terrains. I’ve used the DR Power Pro 26 to clear overgrown grass near buildings, cut trails through wooded areas, and knock down brush where riding mowers aren't safe.
Compared to a weed whacker, it’s far more efficient, especially on these large or uneven areas.
What I Like (Pros)
- Excellent on steep and uneven terrain
- Powerful enough for thick weeds and light brush
- Floating deck adapts well to different ground contours
- Electric start is a huge convenience
- Easy to transport in a pickup
- Doesn’t tear up the yard like our skid steer
What Could Be Better (Cons)
- Gear selector could be more defined (easy to overshoot gears)
- No hour meter included (surprising at this price point)
Maintenance & Long-Term Results
After two years of use:
- Blade is still cutting well despite hitting rocks
- Areas that were cleared are much more manageable
- Now maintainable with a zero-turn mower
- Ravines are usable again for walking, sledding, and kids playing
Is the DR Power Pro 26 Worth It for You?
If you have steep terrain, overgrown acreage, ravines, or areas too danerous for a riding mower, the DR Power Pro 26 brush cutter is absolutely worth considering.
It’s not the cheapest option, but it’s a serious tool that has made reclaiming and maintaining our property safer, faster, and more enjoyable.
