Learn How to Build Custom Bookshelves and Transform Your Space

The satisfaction of knowing how to build custom bookshelves will make every effort worthwhile.

Why Build Your Own Bookshelves?

Store-bought shelving can be expensive, flimsy, or the wrong size for your room. By building your own:

  • You control the dimensions to fit your wall perfectly.
  • You choose the finish and style that matches your home.
  • You save money while creating something sturdy and custom.

Project Overview – DIY Custom Bookshelves

The room we were working with measured 12 feet by 10 feet with 8-foot ceilings. We customized the shelves to fit our space. To make the most of the space, we built:

  • One small bookshelf: 4 feet wide × 38 inches tall.
  • One large bookshelf: 5 feet wide × 7 feet tall.

Each step in this process is crucial for a successful build custom bookshelves project.

This layout gave us both a large wall of storage and a smaller shelf for additional books and décor with wall space for pictures above.

Materials and Tools for Building a Bookshelf

Here’s what you’ll need for this project:

Materials:

  • 3–4 sheets of 3/4in Radiata Pine Plywood (Home Depot)
    • Large 5 foot by 7 foot shelves:
    • 3 sheets plywood
    • 4 1x4x8 boards
    • Smaller 4 foot by 3 foot shelves
    • 1 sheet of plywood
    • 3 1x4x8 boards
  • 1×4 trim boards
  • Wood glue
  • 1 ¼″ coarse-thread screws
  • Shelf pins

Tools:

Pro tip: One sheet of plywood yields four bookshelf strips when cut to 11 ¾″ wide. This size is perfect for books while minimizing waste.

Other Suppies:

Step 3: Adding Adjustable Shelves

Using a shelf pin jig, drill evenly spaced holes in each vertical support. This allows you to adjust the height of shelves as needed.

Adjustable shelves make your bookshelf more versatile for books, baskets, or décor. This feature has been great for us, changing the heights as needed with changing decor and books over the years.

We did do a few permanent shelves to help stabilize the larger shelf towards the middle of the shelf and to help keep the unit overall straight. This shelf was put in about 40 inches up from the bottom shelf.

We also added 1/4 boards in the back on the top and bottom of the unit to strengthen the unit and add a spot the be able to attach the unit to the wall.

Step 4: Dividers and Trim

For a professional, built-in look we added dividers and trim.

  • Add dividers to break wide shelves into smaller sections.
  • Rip a 1×4 boards into 3/8in strips and attach to the front edges with glue and brad nails.
  • Install a kick plate at the bottom.
